What to Expect at Your First Fertility Appointment

Are you preparing for your first fertility consultation? A first visit to the fertility clinic can be a bit overwhelming. At Reproductive Gynecology & Infertility, we strive to create a comfortable space where you can talk freely about your fertility struggles, hopes, and goals.

We understand the spectrum of feelings that accompany reproductive obstacles. At Reproductive Gynecology & Infertility, we approach each patient’s case with compassion and respect. We prioritize your physical and emotional comfort from the moment you walk into our state-of-the-art fertility center. The following are some of the things you can expect from Reproductive Gynecology & Infertility.

Preparing For Your First Fertility Consultation

Education is a crucial part of our practice at Reproductive Gynecology & Infertility. You will be more relaxed and receptive to treatment if you know what to expect during your first visit.

Some elements of an initial fertility visit are generally the same from patient to patient, even though every consultation differs slightly. We offer every new patient a virtual consultation lasting approximately 40 minutes, where we will go over many of your fertility challenges, goals, and concerns. Please review and fill out our documents/forms before your virtual consultation. Your first in-office visit will likely involve the following stages.

  • Review your medical history. Your medical history might have contributed to your current fertility struggles, so please be ready to discuss it in detail. You will also be asked about the medical histories of your family members. (Though if you aren’t exactly sure about specific details, that’s okay.) Your team will be looking for indications that your concerns have a genetic component. Additionally, your lifestyle will be examined for potential causes of infertility. These might include alcohol and drug use (current or past), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and pregnancy terminations, among other relevant topics. While these are highly sensitive subjects for most of us, we always treat our patients with respect and compassion, and we strive every day to provide a safe, judgment-free space. Having the right information will help us find the most effective treatment for your unique needs.
  • Tell us about your road to pregnancy. Women begin their journey toward conception well before they even think about getting pregnant. Your clinical team will need information about your menstrual history (if your cycles occur regularly, if they’re heavy, light, or if they fluctuate). Your current attempts at conception are also important. How frequently do you have intercourse? Do you time your ovulations accurately? Have you attempted any fertility treatments? (If you have had previous fertility treatments, please provide your medical records before testing.)
  • In-office lab screenings. Your fertility and overall health are interconnected, so we have to make sure you’re healthy. We perform comprehensive testing, including lab work and ultrasounds to get a fuller picture of your overall health. If there are indications of abnormalities or other medical conditions that can be treated easily, addressing them will only improve your health, strength, and conditioning. Optimizing your health will make conceiving and experiencing a successful pregnancy more likely.
