LGBTQ Family Building

Every family takes a different road to parenthood. At Reproductive Gynecology & Infertility, we stand by every intended parent’s right to build healthy, happy families on their terms. Our diverse staff of reproductive specialists is proud to provide expert family building services to Northeast Ohio’s LGBTQ communities.

We believe everyone has the right to create a family.

Since 1993, Reproductive Gynecology & Infertility has helped nontraditional families, and single people welcome healthy babies into their homes. We want to allow every patient to experience the joys of parenthood, irrespective of their marital status, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

We provide a wide range of treatment options to help members of the LGBTQ community build their families. Whether you identify as cis-gendered, trans-gendered, or non-binary, we will provide you with treatment options appropriate to your transition protocols and identity.

The most effective treatment course will depend upon your family structure, reproductive objectives, and biological makeup. We will work closely with you to develop a plan that addresses your unique circumstances.

Reproductive Options for Cis Women

Cis-female couples can opt for intrauterine insemination (IUI). This treatment transfers donor sperm into the fallopian tube. Ovulation induction medications can also be administered. (This step will increase the number of mature eggs.)

Moreover, donor sperm will be processed using a technique called “sperm washing.” This procedure maximizes the concentration of healthy, motile sperm and removes less active sperm and debris from the sample.

For women under 35 with no reproductive challenges, IUI should be a practical option.

There is also the option of reciprocal in vitro fertilization (IVF), where one partner donates reproductive cells (eggs) while the other partner carries the pregnancy. Reciprocal IVF allows both partners to participate, with one providing genetic material while the other carries the child.

Invocell is an FDA-approved assisted reproductive technology (ART) option that allows the embryo to be incubated internally using a medical incubation device. This technology uses fewer medications and is less costly than traditional in vitro fertilization. Many LGBTQ parents-to-be choose this innovative solution because it allows for enhanced engagement throughout the full course of the pregnancy.

Reproductive Options for Cis Men

While potential parents across genders might need donor eggs, they are essential for cis-male couples seeking pregnancy. Though the eggs might be from a known donor like a relative or friend, many intended parents opt for anonymous donors and a gestational carrier. The potential parent also has the option of using his own sperm or that of a donor. The reproductive specialists at RGI will help you find the best solution for your family-building needs.

We offer comprehensive genetic screening services for known egg donors to assure optimal outcomes.

Reproductive Options for the Trans Community

Transgender couples interested in building families should work with their care team to determine the best course for preserving fertility* during their transition. Because gender reassignment hormone therapy inhibits fertility, it will have to be paused before attempting reproduction to achieve a return to fertility.
